WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Judiciary Committee chairman subpoenaed former White House adviser Karl Rove on Monday to testify about the Bush administration's firing of U.S. attorneys and prosecution of a former Democratic governor.
The subpoena by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., continues a long-running legal battle with ex-President George W. Bush's former White House political director. Rove previously refused to appear before the panel, contending that former presidential advisers cannot be compelled to testify before Congress.

At Last
Obama addressed Israel and Palestine, today. Just as I knew he would, he did not signal a continuance of former policy. And just as I knew he would, he stayed within the confines of US policy just enough to keep attacks at bay, but avoided language that strongly cast Israel as a righteous victim and Palestinians the villians. Expedience required that he speak to Hamas shooting rockets and the natural response of Israel to want to protect itself, first, but then he went on to subtly make the case that the Palestinians have a right to all the things Israel has been denying them -- in essence -- reminding people why Hamas fires those rockets.
At last -- a US president called for an agreement respectful of the Palestinians. At last -- a US president acknowledged that Palestinians have a right to assurances of their security -- too. At last -- a US president made it clear that Palestinians cannot remain repressed and dominated if there is to be peace because as long as they have no hope for the future -- there will be no peace.

A South Range woman and her ex-husband have pleaded no contest to charges that they neglected a 9-month-old colt nicknamed Windchill whose poor condition and eventual death last year roused the sympathies of animal lovers across the country.
Pamela Kaye Javenkoski, 48, and Shane E. Javenkoski, 34, both reached plea agreements Thursday in Douglas County Court, five days before they were to go to trial on the charges. The agreements could allow Shane Javenkoski to purge the charge from his record, while Pamela Javenkoski, who had a boarding contract with Windchill’s owner, still could spend some time in jail.

First, Mr. Obama should scrap his proposal for $150 billion in business tax cuts, which would do little to help the economy. Ideally he’d scrap the proposed $150 billion payroll tax cut as well, though I’m aware that it was a campaign promise.
