There was a photoop showing Bush shaking hands in a poncho with the Asian leaders and then some twaddle about free markets and no tariffs and continuation of all those great policies that led directly into this mess.

The big one being the Ponzi scheme of unregulated
"new financial instruments" which were bad loans wrapped deceptively into CDO/CDS and sold off to European and Asian banks and other investors that helped bring this crisis to the enormity it is now.

They trusted the American banking system. They didn't realize how big thieves Bush, Gramm and other republicans of the modern parasitic/vampire era are. They allowed every scammer domestic and foreign a free hand and protection. For a price.

Notice there was nothing said by Bush that these scams his administration blessed are to be rectified or the buyers are to be compensated in any way?

That would imply the banks did something wrong or restitution is due.

After years of hesitation, US carmaker General Motors (GM) has signed a deal to invest in the Russian auto industry.

GM will enter into a joint venture with AvtoVAZ, Russia's biggest carmaker and the manufacturer of the Lada, with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD).

The EBRD and GM will invest $240m (£170m) in equity and loans in the project, which will be managed jointly by GM and AvtoVAZ.

The deal should safeguard production of the Lada, a car whose shaky reputation has all but eliminated its export market since the collapse of communism.

The export market for AvtoVAZ and its rivals has collapsed since the fall of communism.

And although almost all Russians drive locally made cars, they only do so because trade barriers make them far cheaper than imported brands.

GM has produced lousy cars for years and has gotten their asses handed to them because American buyers are fed up with paying for major repairs on these lemons. So they've found a niche in the market where Russians are virtually forced to buy these shitty cars because of a virtually closed market.

These bastards shouldn't be getting a dime of taxpayer dollars to continue their moronic marketing agenda.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. These guys all claim to be Republican, "hands off my business", rock ribbed, free market place guys but they're all socialists when it comes to their bottom line.

An internal CIA probe has concluded that agency officials deliberately misled Congress, the White House and federal prosecutors about key details of the 2001 downing of an airplane carrying U.S. missionaries in Peru, according to a senior lawmaker who called yesterday for a new criminal inquiry into the case.

The agency's inspector general said CIA officers repeatedly ignored rules of engagement in a joint U.S.-Peruvian campaign to halt airborne drug smugglers, resulting in the downing of at least 10 other aircraft without proper warnings. Afterward, CIA managers concealed the problems from lawmakers and the Justice Department, the agency watchdog said.

Even the White House was kept in the dark, as agency officials and lawyers withheld key details while cautioning their staff to avoid putting anything in writing that might be used later in a criminal or civil case, the inspector general said

Somali pirates transform villages into boomtowns, pumping money into homes, businesses

Somalia's increasingly brazen pirates are building sprawling stone houses, cruising in luxury cars, marrying beautiful women — even hiring caterers to prepare Western-style food for their hostages.

And in an impoverished country where every public institution has crumbled, they have become heroes in the steamy coastal dens they operate from because they are the only real business in town.

"The pirates depend on us, and we benefit from them," said Sahra Sheik Dahir, a shop owner in Haradhere, the nearest village to where a hijacked Saudi Arabian supertanker carrying $100 million in crude was anchored Wednesday.

These boomtowns are all the more shocking in light of Somalia's violence and poverty: Radical Islamists control most of the country's south, meting out lashings and stonings for accused criminals. There has been no effective central government in nearly 20 years, plunging this arid African country into chaos.

Life expectancy is just 46 years; a quarter of children die before they reach 5.

But in northern coastal towns like Haradhere, Eyl and Bossaso, the pirate economy is thriving thanks to the money pouring in from pirate ransoms that have reached $30 million this year alone.

"There are more shops and business is booming because of the piracy," said Sugule Dahir, who runs a clothing shop in Eyl. "Internet cafes and telephone shops have opened, and people are just happier than before."

After that, the nation’s premier newspapers, specifically The New York Times and The Washington Post, got suckered into running single-source, frontpage propaganda about Saddam Hussein’s nonexistent weapons of mass destruction. Dad made it thru surgery fine & no further sign of cancer. But a few days later they set a 10cc drip of anasthetic to 100cc and he had a rough overdose. A night of convulsions and difficult breathing, while his body processed the drugs. Now they want to move him 80+ miles to a VA 'recovery facility'-- stupid bureaucracy. But it looks like he'll be ok.

The student dentist FINALLY finished my root canal & installed a post. But he hasn't done the crown yet.

I stopped in at the bar, for the first time in quite a while. Had a nice talk with Jo Boobs. Her School of Burlesque is cranking out so many new superstars, it's killing me...

What pissed off many, many Democrats for the two presidential elections before this one wasn't just that we lost. It's also that the wins could easily be viewed in a range from "illegitimate" (definitely in 2000, possibly in 2004) to "really, really suspicious" (definitely in 2000 and 2004). So when we got our lawsuit on and were pretty goddamned angry, it wasn't just sour grapes. It's that we thought we had won.

Conservatives can't claim that in any rational way this time. 2008 wasn't an electoral or popular vote squeaker. John McCain just fucking lost and Barack Obama won. While some conservatives have been downright gracious and others have respected the win while promising hearty opposition, there's also been a vomiting to the fore of the nutbags who think the apocalypse is nigh in the Reign of Obama.

Here's some advice to conservatives seeking to define who they are in an America that said, "Suck on this" to them and voted for the Democrat: Stop being such fucking jerks about shit. Sure, sure, this advice comes from someone who believes that conservative ideology needs to be burned to the ground and the ashes made into an artificial ass that he can then fuck into dust that he can then take a post-orgasm piss on, but, you know, otherwise it comes from the heart.

There's gotta be a lot of people on the right who are just embarrassed by the stupid shit that anti-Obama-ites have been doing and saying. The spike in gun sales by those fearing that Obama will personally take away their assault weapons is like watching mad mongoloids rush for the last cup of pudding at the group home. Proving once again nothing says "I'm an easily manipulated pussy" like buying more and bigger guns, the whole surge in purchases is being fanned by people with, let's say, a vested interest in making sure the nutbags plunk down their diminishing savings on that new Glock: the firearms industry and the NRA (motto: "Scaring you stupid fucks into giving us more and more money for at least 30 years").

In serious conversations among Republicans since their election debacle Tuesday, what name is mentioned most often as the Moses, or Reagan, who could lead them out of the wilderness before 40 years?

To the consternation of many Republicans, it is none other than Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House.

Gingrich is far from a unanimous or even a consensus choice to run for president in 2012, but there is a strong feeling in Republican ranks that he is the only leader of their party who has shown the skill and energy to attempt a comeback quickly.

Even one of his strongest supporters for president in 2012 admits it is a "very risky choice." But Republicans are in a desperate mood after the fiasco of John McCain's seemingly safe candidacy.

Republicans seem chastened by the failure of seeking moderate, independent and even Democratic votes. They are ready to try going back to the "old-time religion."

One Republican critic of Gingrich concedes that he has an "unlimited" energy flow and a constant stream of ideas, an important commodity in a party that appears to have run short of ideas during the Bush years. But there is widespread concern about what is described in the party as deep "character flaws" of Gingrich's that would be difficult to overcome in a presidential campaign.

Nobody in Republican ranks, however, matches Gingrich's dynamism.

The consternation among Republicans is concentrated on McCain's failure to capitalize on Democratic flaws.

It would be a rocky road for Gingrich to the nomination, much less the presidency, but there are no other serious candidates inside the party at the moment.

On May 22, 1856, Senator Preston Brooks beat Senator Charles Sumner with his Gutta-percha wood walking cane in the Senate chamber because of a speech Sumner had made three days earlier, criticizing President Franklin Pierce and Southerners who sympathized with pro-slavery violence in Kansas ("Bleeding Kansas").

In particular, Sumner had lambasted Brooks' kinsman, Senator Andrew Butler, who was not in attendance when the speech was read, describing slavery as a harlot, comparing Butler with Don Quixote for embracing it, and mocking Butler for a physical handicap. Senator Stephen Douglas of Illinois, who was also a subject of abuse during the speech, suggested to a colleague while Sumner was orating that "this damn fool [Sumner] is going to get himself shot by some other damn fool."

At first intending to challenge Sumner to a duel, Brooks consulted with fellow South Carolina Rep. Laurence M. Keitt on dueling etiquette. Keitt instructed him that dueling was for gentlemen of equal social standing, and suggested that Sumner occupied a lower social status comparable to a drunkard due to the supposedly coarse language he had used during his speech. Brooks thus decided to attack Sumner with a cane.

NEWSWEEK has also learned that Palin's shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family—clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

I just wanted to say that... I don't know what to say. I can't even find anything to cut-n-paste that even comes close to capturing what I want to say. Being the fatalist that I am, of course I am well aware of the obstacles that lie before us but as a proud black liberal I allow myself the indulgence of basking in the moment. EDIT: If Obama doesn't take Indiana (as the poll indicates he won't), I don't think the chances are very good that the Dems will acquire a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

I wouldn't rule it out completely, but I'd say odds were pretty strong against it.

Troops serving abroad have given nearly six times as much money to Obama's presidential campaign as they have to McCain's, the Center for Responsive Politics said.

You're not going to believe this. Two Canuck assholes that call themselves The Masked Avengers called up Palin and pretended to be French president Sarkozy. This goes on for close to 6 minutes.

Tonite was Kehinde Wiley's opening at the gallery. He's a black man who paints modern black men in ornate old-master style. The paintings are huge-- like 12 feet tall by 20 feet wide.

Some of the frames, alone, weigh around 800 lbs.

So it was like a barn raising, getting these things on the wall.

This is not the type of art where Joe the Asshxle says "my kid could do that".
Or, "Whut is it supposed to be?"

Many pedestrians stopped and gawked thru the big glass overhead door, as the show went up.
But black people in particular had their minds blown. I can't tell you how many times I heard them say they wanted to come back with their teenage sons.

Lots of sexy black folks at the opening. I wore an Obama t-shirt I bought on the street, with the caption "H.N.I.C". There was an awkward moment when the straightlaced, white gallery owner asked me what it meant. But a former Miss Jamaica intervened and said she loved it, so I was off the hook.

Next week the Keith Haring retrospective opens at another location. We're showing his "10 Commandments" series, and they dwarf even Kehinde's canvases. Haring's are 25 or 30 feet tall. Each day, an 18-wheeler delivers 2. That's all that fit in 53' trailer. Getting those on the wall is a 2 week process of pulleys & scaffolding & thick steel brakets.
The real show stopper there is the catalog. It's the size of 6 red bricks. It weighs a hernia. But inside is a reminder that, in the days before Macintosh computers; one guy with a magic marker could do so much.

..for the Gramps/Dumbfuck ticket. Somewhere , McCain has to be thinking "Gee thanks Dick , thanks a fuck of a lot!"

An Obama supporter was shopping with his infant son when an angry McCain-Palin supporter rammed his shopping cart. Luckily, the police were able to identify the man from video of his license plate, and he was charged with assault.

Wednesday, October 15

In Greensboro, North Carolina, a reporter Joe Killian was kicked to the ground at a Palin rally just for doing his job. He was interviewing Obama supporters who were protesting the Palin rally after a group of angry McCain-Palin supporters warned him that Palin was the story - not the protesters. One McCain-Palin supporter was so angry at Killian for interviewing the Obama supporters that he kicked him to the ground - from behind.
