NFL Playoff Challenge

For anyone who just hasn't quite had enough fantasy football, as well as to give folks a chance for revenge after I kicked Speedy's ass in the championship game, I set up a playoff game. Moose, the winner of the pick'em, is already in, so there's another chance at revenge.

I've never done this before, so I don't know that I'm doing it all correctly, but it appears that I have to email you an invitation. If you're interested, send me an email ("timbuk3_98@yahoo.com or via this site) and I'll send an invite to whatever email you want it sent to. I've already emailed everyone who's email address is listed in the two fantasy leagues, and as of earlier this morning we had 4 coaches.

Playoffs start Saturday, so if you want in you'd better do it soon. You'll have to set up a (free) nfl.com user id and password before you can join.

It looks like it could be fun. Each player is assigned a "value", and you can only spend so many "value points" each weekend, so no one can just pick the obviously best players. It'll take some thinking.

Give it a shot. The more the merrier.

Update: I wouldn't count on it, but it looks like the high score (on the site, not in the league) wins a trip to the Stupid Bowl.

21 Days Left

(The Bush) administration did more than commit crimes. It waged war against the law itself.

Dear Attorney General-Designate Eric Holder,

We the undersigned citizens of the United States hereby formally petition you to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute any and all government officials who have participated in War Crimes.

Don't Forget To Reset Your Clock

New Year revellers will have to hold their drinks a second longer to usher in year 2009. This is because an extra second will be added to our standard time measurements, which are based on atomic clocks, on the cusp of 2009 to bring it in sync with the rotation of te Earth.

New Year Rhymes for a New Depression

New Year Rhymes for a New Depression

Should auld expenses be forgot
An' never brought tae mind?
Should former bailouts be forgot
An' chits the bankers signed?
(Chorus)
For auld lang syne, my dear,
It's oot o' sight an' mind,
Let's aw' forget tha' massive debt
An' ignore tha' bottom line.

When came tha' day they said they'd pay,
They formed a lengthie line,
Where each did joke that 'e was broke
An' needed much more time.

Our leaders, daft, will issue drafts
When 'ere a rich man whines,
While you, poor sot, will pay the lot
Until the end o' time.

The Mystical Blago-Burris Groove Thing Explained

By now you probably know that Rod Blagojevich, the indicted governor of Illinois, has nominated Roland Burris, a popular former Illinois Attorney General and 3-time candidate for governor, to fill Obama's vacated Senate seat.

In their usual pattern of forming a circular firing squad over an issue that doesn't matter, the Democrats are now infighting over what to do about this "heinous" situation. Oh, if only they'd dig in their heels and keep something that matters in the news for days...

Sarah Palin’s Crazy Ex-Satanists

Are ex-satanists the new ex-gays? I sure hope so. Ex-gays are pathetic and sad ("I'm totally denying my sexuality, and you all should too!"), but ex-satanists are hilarious - especially when they're members of an Assemblies of God front group! (Y'all remember Sarah Palin's church, right?) I just wish Amy Klobuchar hadn't requested a $500,000 earmark for them. WTF, Amy?

Predicting the demise of the USA by 2010

I have wondered whether this nation's economic model will collapse,
to the point where our money is just paper, and trade becomes so sporadic that maybe you just -can't- get certain previously-ubiquitious items in certain areas, anymore. Like maybe no pineapples in Minnesota in Winter.

Sometimes, I even wonder whether that would be best for us. Better that than the US economy continuing, but the US politically becoming something so repressive and destructive that our best aspects are extinct.

Then along comes some Russian phony predicting the end of the USA by 2010.

As I read the article, I didn't want to be on the same side as him.

Halfway through, it became clear that he's just cashing-in on anti-American sentiment in Russia.

And by the time I got to the map at the end-- his diagram of the borders of the new countries which will replace the USA-- I was laughing at anyone who takes him seriously.

The one thing I do believe, is that Russians have become childish and cranky about blaming America for all their woes. And this carries-over into an increasingly crappy attitude toward individual Americans from individual Russians. I've observed this myself.

Godwin's Law

Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an adage formulated by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states:

"As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."

Godwin's Law is often cited in online discussions as a deterrent against the use of arguments in the reductio ad Hitlerum form.

The rule does not make any statement about whether any particular reference or comparison to Hitler or the Nazis might be appropriate, but only asserts that one arising is increasingly probable. It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact. Although in one of its early forms Godwin's Law referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions, the law is now applied to any threaded online discussion: electronic mailing lists, message boards, chat rooms, and more recently blog comment threads and wiki talk pages.

Does the US support genocidal actions?

Our "religious pecking order" is undeniable: "christians", Christians, Jews, Muslims. (I'll let you fit gays and "gypsies" [= the unemployed] in where you see fit.)

Have we reached the point where we want the extermination of a people?

Are they just too far away for us to care?

Or have we become so jaded, so drunk with power, that we think that one-sided "war to the bitter end" waged by our proxies, using our weapons, can be justified?

Bush mass for shut ins for 12-28-08

Bush mass for sahut ins is on the air!

LIVE FROM THE ST GEORGE THE BLESSED CATHERDRAL IN CRAWFORD TEXAS ITS BUSH MASS FOR SHUT INS!

Good morning Bush worshippers, those who are ill and those who it's just best not to mix with society. May Lord God Bush bless you all for coming. For it is he who brought us life and everything else. He is a thousand points of light! He makes the sun rise in the morning, puts the frost on our flakes and puts the fruit on the trees. All praise the glory of Lord God Bush. Today we celebrate the birth of the baby George the Blessed.

BIRTH OF BABY GEORGE THE BLESSED CELEBRATION

Sixty two years ago today, God in his infinite wisdom sent his second son George down to save us from all that is evil. Those who believe in Lord God Bush are spared from bad things for they only happen to those who do not believe. Thus, spreading the holy word of Gerge is more important than everm to save the most we can.

SING PRAISE TO LORD GOD BUSH

There once was a note, pure and easy,
Playing so free, like a breath rippling by.
The note is eternal, I hear it, it sees me,
Forever we blend it, forever we die.

I listened and I heard music in a word,
And words when you played your guitar,
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering,
And a child flew past me riding in a star.

As people assemble,
Civilization is trying to find a new way to die,
But killing is really merely scene changer,
All men are bored with other men's lies.

I listened and I heard music in a word,
And words when you played your guitar,
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering,
And a child flew past me riding in a star.

Gas on the hillside, oil in the teacup,
Watch all the chords of life lose their joy,
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness,
The note that began all can also destroy.

We all know success when we all find our own dreams,
And our love is enough to knock down any walls,
And the future's been seen as men try to realize,
The simple secret of the note in us all.

I listened and I heard music in a word,
And words when you played your guitar,
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering,
And a child flew past me riding in a star.

There once was a note, pure and easy,
Playing so free, like a breath rippling by.

There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen
There once was a note, listen

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CHENEY

And the savior was born to the holy mother Barbara and the holy father George and he shall be called George so things would not be confusing.

What is it that the Profit Cheney is trying to teach us? It is that the holy name George was chosen for our benefit so we would not have to suffer confusion. This is the word of George.

Bush mass is over

Your attendance has been recorded and will be sent to the proper authorities. Go in arrogance, may the Lord God George W Bush be with you. Now for your listening enjoyment, once again we have the wonderful Bushmas Carolers here to sing you a Bushmas carol. Enjoy.

MERRY BUSHMAS

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord George laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where he lay,
The little Lord George asleep in the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord George no crying he makes.
I love Thee, Lord George, look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord George, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.

Presidents: Best to Worst

There aren't a lot of rules. You can rank them "Least worst to worst", or "Best to least best", or whatever your heart desires. You definitely don't need to rank them all. Rank only those you know something about, or only those in your lifetime, or whatever parameter you choose. I listed all of them back to Eisenhower, because he was Pres the year I was born and because I wanted to include one "good" Republican. You can go back further, or not as far, or include only "famous" Presidents, whatever.

Give as little or as much justification for your choices as you want, or none at all.

My own ranking is in the extended post so you can make your own list before you see it, compare it after the fact, or use it as a model. Like I said, not a lot of rules...

Contrast

As I caught up this morning I noticed an interesting contrast. Lloyd's post about the "corrupt" cop (open to interpretation, I suppose) contrasts well with billy's comment about Cheney's indifference to being a law-breaker.

But both men come across like Cosa Nostra crime bosses, to me. It's not that they don't necessarily know they're "not following the rules". It's that they don't care because they know they'll get away with it.

The cop will keep his job. Cheney will keep his retirement. And both will keep all the graft they've set aside for a rainy day.

BTW, churchie's right. Never argue with a cop (on the spot), save it for court, although sometimes it will save you some time to be meek and submissive to the cop, even though you're seething inside, because they'll occasionally not write the ticket if you feed their ego enough. Which is really just another way of saying "life is easier if you (let them) get away with it."

Of course, the courts almost always consider the cop to be an "expert witness", even when they're lying through their teeth, so don't count on winning in court, either.

This is why I support extremely heavy penalties when "officials" who refuse to follow the law get caught. And why I no longer insist, when pressed, that "Bush and Cheney are criminals" but only insist that they deserve their day in court.

The Lao cop, on the other hand, was probably just working within the unspoken system. But the cops in Mexico are the same way, and I know of at least one man who ended up paralyzed for not playing the game, there...

We write down the rules for a reason, but judges and cops should have the ability to suspend the rules when they don't make sense in a given situation.

Jesus

Normally if you get "whistled" by the traffic police here, for not having a helmet on, plus no license, no insurance, no registration, you give them about $3.50, and you say "Thank you."
The S. Korean young man who I teach English to (the one who does a little Christian missionary work on the side), told me that on the night before Lao Independence Day, he got pulled over for riding 3 on a motorbike, and no helmet. Then the next thing, of course, is that he didn't have a driver's license either.
Instead of paying the $3.50 and getting no receipt, he bravely decided to argue back against the "authoritarian dictatorship" as personified in this "corrupt" traffic cop.
The policeman then gave him a written ticket for "no helmet", "three on a motorbike", and "no drivers' license". The ticket was for a little over $20.
The Korean kid then got angry, and pointed at a specific bike riding by with 3 riders, and no one with helmets. "Why don't you pull THEM over??"
The policeman said, "Well, I know THEM."
Then the Korean kid got REALLY pissed off at this "blatant corruption", swore at the policeman in Korean, and demanded his name and phone number.
The policeman gave him his name, plus his mobile phone number. Both of the other Koreans immediately called that number, and no one heard any phone ringing.
So then my student demanded to talk to the policeman's boss. The policeman protested at first, but finally called his boss.
My student explained the problem in his broken Lao, and then handed the phone to the traffic policeman.
The traffic policeman evidently took a little verbal abuse from "his boss", and then hung up the phone.
"My boss says you're right, and I'm wrong. He told me to fine you $6, to tear up the ticket, and to never pull you over again."
My student told me that it took him about 1 1/2 hours to "win the argument".
Jeeesus!
He's lucky he didn't get tasered, eh?

The Guilt-by-Association Crowd

Anne Davidow posts a good column at Buzzflash about the republics' and the MSM's automatic association with Blago, Obama, and corruption. She also touches on the republics' dredging up Marc Rich and Elian Gonzales with the nomination of Eric Holder for Attorney General. File under, "They'll Do It Every Time":

The doctrine of equivalence about matters that are in no way equivalent seems to suit certain factions that derive a little temporary political heft they hope will serve their partisan agenda. It's a popular gambit Republicans think will work for them with respect to the Rod Blagojevich mess in Illinois and Obama's nomination of Eric Holder for Attorney General.

The false analogy postulates that Illinois Governor Blagojevich, who offered to sell Obama's former Senate seat to the highest bidder, is from all appearances a corrupt politician, and since Obama comes from Illinois and both he and Blagojevich are Democrats it follows that Obama must be also be corrupt. Such is the tortured logic that prevails in the minds of Republican opponents so angst-ridden they can't even wait until the President-Elect takes office. They seem to have the same mind-set that informed Bush when he invaded Iraq - - in this case to initiate a kind of preemptive impeachment.

Toyota forecasts loss as sales slide

Damned unions are even destroying companies without unions, now.

Of course, it can't be the fault of a failed economic and political philosophy.

It makes perfect sense for a politician from a foreign automaker state to call for American workers to be paid the same as their foreign counterparts, but not for the CEOs of any company in America to be paid the same as their foreign counterpart.

According to the Business Week, the average CEO of a major corporation made 42 times the average hourly worker's pay in 1980. By 1990 that had almost doubled to 85 times. In 2000, the average CEO salary reached an unbelievable 531 times that of the average hourly worker.

So now we can continue to buy cars that the holy gasoline goes into and is used.

Edginess and fear
Fun for all that children call
Their favorite time of the year

Evildoers in the air
Death is everywhere
Olden times and ancient rhymes
Of hate and nightmares to share

Evildoers in the air
Ugly everywhere
Yuletide by the fireside
And forgetful memories there

Bushmas time is here
Threats to what we hold dear
Oh, that we could always see
Such spirit through the year

Useless Crap industry seeks bailout

I attended a mandatory employment-counseling appointment, as part of my unemployment benefits.

Instead of the dingy, bulky 'welfare line' govt building I expected, it was a crisp white-collar environment on the 7th floor of an expensive-looking commercial high rise. (Although that location may be a grim sign of office-space vacancy rates in the city.)

The office wasn't technically part of 'unemployment'. It was some other 'workforce' program. The video projectors were new and the power-point presentation was corporate. Some of the employees had the old civil servant slouch, and some seemed like hapless geriatric volunteers. But others were corporate consultant types.

They offer lots of seminars. Private consultants called The Five O'Clock Club offered a speaker after the mandatory meeting, and a slick woman urged us to attend-- admitting that she was afraid the intended audience would stay home due to the snow. When she said their speaker was from the Financial Services Industry, I almost laughed out loud. Out of 50 unemployed attendees, only one guy volunteered to go see the speaker. The volunteer was in immaculate business suit, with freshly-trimmed silver hair. He looked like he thought the mandatory appointment was a big interview. Or else he looked desperate.

One of the forms I filled-out asked the minimum wage I'd be willing to accept. I considered writing $5,000/hour. Or $2/hour.

Arrest energizes pundits

Gene Lyons skewers the MSM over the latter's gratuitous coverage of Blago.

Although you'll never see celebrity journalists discussing it on TV, one reason the country's in such terrible shape is the media's substitution of political "infotainment" for news.

It's cheaper and easier to feature chatter by Washington insider pundits than, say, to keep a functioning news bureau working in Baghdad or Beijing.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's arrest for allegedly trying to auction off President-elect Barack Obama's Senate seat started a veritable avalanche of idle gossip, witless speculation and downright character assassination such as we haven't seen in this country since-well, since Whitewater, actually, the most elaborate shaggy-dog story in U.S. history. On cable TV, they were partying like it was 1998.

Bush says sacrificed free-market principles to save economy

Just when you think you've heard it all when it comes to ridiculous, outrageous statements by Bush, think again. Like the other day an interviewer called his bluff on his comment that the US invaded Iraq because Al QaaQaa was there, when the fact of the matter is that the group wasn't there until we invaded, and he responded "So what?", these statements are mind-boggling...

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President George W. Bush said in an interview Tuesday he was forced to sacrifice free market principles to save the economy from "collapse."

"I've abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system," Bush told CNN television, saying he had made the decision "to make sure the economy doesn't collapse."

Honda slashes forecast again

"US automakers need to give us a plan for success" is a bullshit argument.

US automakers can't control Bush/GOP economic policy. It's those policies that have put the entire world in the hurt bag.

It's an obvious choice for someone who has either just lost their job, or is in fear of losing their job and not finding another one, to not take on a car payment, right now.

No one who is using the economic crisis to attack the unions is willing to put forth an argument about why, if it's unions that are ruining America, so many non-union businesses are running in the red.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Honda Motor Co issued its third profit warning this year, slashing its operating forecast by two-thirds as the global recession batters car sales and sends the yen soaring.

The deeper-than-expected revision at Japan's No.2 automaker could touch off similar moves at domestic rivals Toyota Motor Corp and Nissan Motor Co, also reeling from the dollar's fall to 13-year lows against the yen.

Automakers everywhere are under enormous pressure to cut costs and save cash to weather the storm as tight credit and weak consumer sentiment hammer demand.

Senate report links Bush to detainee homicides

...media yawns

The bipartisan Senate Armed Services Committee report issued on Thursday -- which documents that "former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other senior U.S. officials share much of the blame for detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba" and "that Rumsfeld's actions were 'a direct cause of detainee abuse' at Guantanamo and 'influenced and contributed to the use of abusive techniques ... in Afghanistan and Iraq'" -- raises an obvious and glaring question: how can it possibly be justified that the low-level Army personnel carrying out these policies at Abu Ghraib have been charged, convicted and imprisoned, while the high-level political officials and lawyers who directed and authorized these same policies remain free of any risk of prosecution? The culpability which the Report assigns for these war crimes is vast in scope and unambiguous:

The executive summary also traces the erosion of detainee treatment standards to a Feb,. 7, 2002, memorandum signed by President George W. Bush stating that the Geneva Convention did not apply to the U.S. war with al Qaeda and that Taliban detainees were not entitled to prisoner of war status or legal protections.

What this country needs is a good war crimes trial...

Ho hum.

Now, there are offers of up to $10 million for the shoes.

Don't try to tell me that Bush hasn't destroyed America's reputation around the world, and don't try to tell me that electing Obama instead of McSame wasn't an absolutely necessary first step in restoring good relations between our country and the rest of the world.

Seriously, anyone (the fundies and the tax protesters) who still defends Bush or the remaining GOPers "hates America" (and most likely, themselves).

And still, there will be idiots who will try to confuse criticism of a politician with criticism of my country.

I hope they let him go free as a symbol of the new "democracy" not that "the tyrant" is gone.

A GM failure would cause production problems, crush already weak demand and potentially open the door to low-cost competitors.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Detroit's Big Three aren't the only automotive companies that want to see the government step in with some much needed financial help.

Bad economic medicine

I am guessing everyone has seen that Obama's Stimulus ideas include up to $50 billion in health care spending...so much for debating the subject, let's just ram it in in the panic-driven spending frenzy we are consumed with.

A good chunk of the health care spending will go towards "modernization" of the industry....installation and upgrading of computer systems and Health Care IT (HIT). But is this money well spent and going to save lives, or will it create more health care concerns? The best available data says the later may prevail...

Phone Company Bail-out

In light of more-recent events, namely the Wall Street bail-out and the auto industry's plea for a bail-out, it is now possible to apply hindsight and see that the telephone companies were beneficiaries of a huge no-strings-attached bailout, earlier this year.

I am referring to the Telecom Amnesty provision, which passed into law with Bush and Obama's support.

The bottom line is that some companies aided in a massive, unconstitutional domestic spying campaign. And some companies refused to spy on Americans. The spying companies would have faced huge financial liability, had their victims been allowed to sue in civil court. Those companies might have been destroyed, and the more-ethical companies would have grown to take their place. The free market would have worked great.

Instead, the crooks were bailed-out. And it was the worst-kind of bail-out. The kind where bad, risky, illegal, stupid corporate decision-making was rewarded with zero consequences. The beneficiaries of the bail-out were not required to disavow their behavior. No one was fired. They were not required to provide any service or compensation to the public who spared their guilty necks. They weren't even required to apologize.

Bush mass for shut ins for 12-14-08

Bush mass for shut ins is on the air!

Today we celebrate positive attitude.

POSITIVE ATTITUDE CELEBRATION

Positive attitude is something that we must have when reviewing the holy record of republican politicians. When the evil democrats shout things like `he's going to jail` or `he committed treason` we must look at it in a positive way and say they did those deeds for freedom and liberty.

SING PRAISE TO LORD GOD BUSH

Day after day I'm more confused
So I look for the light in the pouring rain
You know that's a game that I hate to lose
I'm feelin' the strain, ain't it a shame

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Day after day I'm more confused
So I look for the light in the pouring rain
You know that's a game that I hate to lose
I'm feelin' the strain, ain't it a shame

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CHENEY

Then Lord God Bush looked down upon the people and spoke. `They are true patriots. They did it for freedom and liberty.`

What is it that the Profit Cheney is trying to teach us? It is that if we say the holy words freedom and liberty enough times, things will magically disappear. This is the word of George.

Bush mass is over

Your attendance has been recorded and will be sent to the United States Department of Holiness. Go in arrogance, may the Lord God George W Bush be with you. Now once again, the lovely Bushmas carolers will sing a wonderful Bushmas carol. Enjoy.

My Daughter

She only managed to get in about 5 months of work last year on the books, so she can't collect unemployment. The second-to-the-last job was sanding, priming and painting 40-foot-high ski-lift poles at Spirit Mountain, a Duluth ski resort for those who've still got enough money to go skiing.
I just got an email from my dad telling me that right now she's on a bus headed for Newark, NJ, to work for the same company, painting amusement park rides in the South. I guess they're like 100 feet up there.
There's absolutely no painting work to be found in Duluth. She got a couple of weeks in, then had to go to St. Cloud (about 150 miles away) for another week, then a bitch of a supervisor got her fired. The workplace is even more dog-eat-dog than it ever was, I suppose.
At least it sounds as though she's traveling between two bad snowstorms -- one's predicted to hit Duluth today, but she's heading away from that one, and the one farther east is waning.
She's 33 years old, but I can't help but worry a little bit.

Profiles in Outrage: Linda Chavez

Linda Chavez was a high-ranking member of the American Federation of Teachers before becoming a union buster working as Staff Director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights for the Reagan Administration.

In 1986, she ran for Senate as a Republican in Maryland, but her campaign was derailed after she accused her opponent Barbara Mikulski of being gay.

Impressed by her strong "pull up the ladder" opposition to affirmative action, George W. Bush nominated her to be Secretary of Labor, but she was forced to withdraw when it became known that she had employed an illegal alien to clean for her. She had publicly criticized Zoe Baird during the "nannygate" appointment for the same thing in 1993.

Her old senate opponent Barbara Mikulski won re-election three times, went on to become the dean of woman senators, and one of the only 11 senators to vote against both 1991 and 2002 authorizations of the use of force in Iraq.

Chavez is now a conservative commentator for Fox "News".

Night Court

The landlord took us to court tonight.

Then he tried to get an adjournment to a later date, claiming neither of his attorneys could make it; and that he wanted "someone from the Synagogue" to be there. Good idea, since the Synagogue is the plaintiff.

Representing myself, I moved for a dismissal. The court didn't like that. But as the facts of the case emerged, the clerk-- then the judge's attorney-- and then Judge Joan-- warmed to my arguements.

Then it was great. Like TV. The judge threatened the landlord with contempt of court, hinted the landlord could lose his state licenses, said she 'didn't believe him' 'for one single minute', urged him to order a transcript of the proceding and review it carefully, and she said he should re-think the entire course of his life, and finally she declared: "Dismissed, WITH PREJUDICE!"

He couldn't shut himself up. He menacingly asked whether her name would be included in the transcript. She spelled it aloud for him. She suggested that his higher-up partners had pushed him into the "line of fire". He replied that it was an "asassination". By me? By the judge? I don't like the violent imagery. Let's keep the rhetoric peaceable, lest he start to get ideas-- about how to deal with me.

What next? I have to decide whether I prefer to keep this whipping boy as my opponent; or whether I should demand that his partners send somebody with more sense, in the future. They might send somebody who is more skilled at screwing me over. Then again, this guy is too dumb to cut his loses, cry uncle, and just frickin' throw money at me to leave.

It was a good night. Afterward we snuck beers into the dog run and called friends with the good news.

Short version: Corrupt cops are set up and filmed to prove their criminality.

It's called an informant plant. The Odessa narcotics unit illegally compelled an informant to plant drugs on Yolanda Madden. The informant testified in federal court he planted the drugs on her and he passed a polygraph confirming the same. Yolanda also passed a polygraph along with a hair follicle and urine test. Our broken criminal justice system ignored the evidence and railroaded her through court sentencing her to 8 years in prison.

Involuntary Drugging in China

In an investigative report published Monday by a state-owned newspaper, public security officials in the city of Xintai in Shandong Province were said to have been institutionalizing residents who persist in their personal campaigns to expose corruption or the unfair seizure of their property. Some people said they were committed for up to two years, and several of those interviewed said they were forcibly medicated.

................

Although China is not known for the kind of systematic abuse of psychiatry that occurred in the Soviet Union, human rights advocates say forced institutionalizations are not uncommon in smaller cities. Robin Munro, the research director of China Labor Bulletin, a rights organization in Hong Kong, said such “an kang” wards — Chinese for peace and health — were a convenient and effective means of dealing with pesky dissidents.

North Korea. The former Soviet Union. Now China.
Never in the United States, though. Psychiatry is only used correctly, there, and no one is forcibly medicated.

Ben Stein is a moron

Well, OK, he's a libertarian free-market laissez-faire fool who's been overpaid for years to give people bad investment advice. Whatever. I disagree with him most of the time. He's so consistently wrong that I even disagree with some of what he wrote, here.

But I agree with this:

Amazingly, we can have whole fleets of C-130's fly to remote areas of Iraq and Afghanistan with pallets of hundred dollar bills piled from floor to ceiling. Then we can pass them out to warlords who make tea for our soldiers one hour and blow their guts out the next. We can send CIA operatives into Somalia and give millions, maybe hundreds of millions, to warlords to fight other killers.

But we cannot find it in our hearts to save our fellow Americans in Ohio and Michigan and Indiana who make the cars and trucks that about half of us buy? We can send billions to Germany and Japan to bail them out after they bombed us and killed our POWs and killed six million Jews. But we cannot help the children and grandchildren of the men and women who fought our war and made us the arsenal of democracy?

Something is very wrong here.

And please don't tell me how GM and Ford and Chrysler have made bad cars that people don't want. I drive only American cars, only GM cars actually, and they are the best, coolest cars I have ever driven: my 1962 Red Corvette, my mighty Cadillacs whose potent engines and super brakes have saved my life many times on the freeway. Yes, the cool people in DC and New York don't drive American cars. But a lot of other good people do and we love them. And my Cadillac dealer down here in the desert, Jessup Motors, gives me a lot better service than my Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, Jaguar, or Acura dealers ever did. I would trust my life to Detroit iron any time.

snip

And why are we so angry at the car companies' executives? They get miserable pay by Wall Street standards and have much harder jobs. Why are we so angry at the unions? They negotiated their deals in good faith. It's not their fault that roller coaster gasoline prices messed up their world. They are our brothers and sisters. They fight our wars. They maintain our middle class lives. Maybe they get paid a lot, but they have been giving back for years. When will it ever be enough? And what about the retirees? They get the benefits they were promised. If those can be taken away, then whose benefits are safe?

LOL, Obama and his Hopenchange Admin isn't getting off to a great start...turning "right wing" with his appointments, gonna keep his war on, and now this IL gov thing...

"Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich wanted President-elect Barack Obama "to put something together…something big" in exchange for going along with Obama's choice to fill his vacant US Senate seat, according to an FBI affidavit unsealed following the Governor's stunning arrest.

"I've got this thing and it's f***ing golden, and, uh, uh, I'm just not giving it up for f***in' nothing. I'm not gonna do it. And I can always use it. I can parachute me there," Blagojevich said in a phone call secretly recorded by the FBI on November 5, the day after the election, according to the affidavit. "

A Whitewash for Blackwater?

The federal manslaughter indictment of five Blackwater Worldwide security guards in the horrific massacre of more than a dozen Iraqi civilians in Baghdad may look like an exercise in accountability, but it's probably the exact opposite -- a whitewash that absolves the government and corporate officials who should bear ultimate responsibility.

Bush is *SUCH* an Asshole

No that this is news to anyone, by now, but the magnitude of Bush's assholishness is astounding.

Several officials in both parties said a breakthrough on a long-stalled bailout came after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi bowed to Bush's demand that the aid come from a fund set aside for the production of environmentally friendlier cars.

Republicans said there had been no lessening in Bush’s refusal to tap the $700 billion financial industry bailout fund to help the automakers.

Yeah, we couldn't have pulled that piddling amount from the Wall Street / Insurance Industry bail out, because $685 billion is SO MUCH LESS than $700 billion and the GOP's donors NEED that money...

No, instead, we have to make sure we have even less chance of preserving the environment.

Look, I'm all for "holding the auto-makers accountable". It's the double-standard, that hedge fund managers and insurance company executives are some of the "world's greatest humanitarians and altruists" that bothers me.

Losing our auto industry is no small thing.

Losing the insurance industry might do us all some good, in comparison.

If I'm ever given the chance to spit on Bush I'm gonna make sure I eat something gross, first.

Letter of Encouragement

Got a letter from the unemployment office today. Apparently I'm eligible for an optional small-business program, called Taking Care Of Business. No further description included, except:

The workshops "may not be close to where you live".

"Once accepted into the program, you will not be able to use the TEL-SERVICE phone system or the web to claim weekly benefits."

"you do not receive start-up funds from the Department of Labor."

"You cannot participate in the fulltime training program" and TCB.

"once accepted into the program, you are not entitled to any extra or extended benefits, including benefits under the current Temporary Emergency Unemployment Compensation Law."

"The program requires you to take a minimum of 20 hours of entreprenurial training, which you find on your own, and meet at least twice with an approved business counselor, in addition to completing several progress reports."

"You must know exactly what type of business you want to start before you apply to the program."

"If you wish to participate in this Self Employment Assistance Program, you must first attend a regional workshop to learn the risks and responsibilities."

"YOU CANNOT START YOUR BUSINESS UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE ATTENDED THIS WORKSHOP AND BEEN OFFICIALLY ACCEPTED INTO THE PROGRAM."

"The workshop does not explore specific business ideas."

Last seen on a cargo ship bound for the land down under, the 130,000 breasts, intended to be a free giveaway in the January issue of men's magazine Ralph, have mysteriously disappeared, according to a story (called "Storm in a C Cup") in WAToday. Ralph editor Santi Pintado has issued a cry for help, urging anyone who has information regarding the displaced breasts to contact him. So far, the only explanation he has come up with is pirates. A likely explanation. In the world of booty, they're moving on up.

This Pisses Me Off, Real Bad

Plaintive question from Time Magazine: Why Do the Mentally Ill Die Younger?

Cynthia Scott is your average health-conscious 56-year-old. She watches what she eats, drinks lots of water and takes a multivitamin every morning. She goes for frequent walks and visits her doctor regularly for checkups, including cholesterol and diabetes screenings.
Scott also has schizoaffective bipolar disorder, a mental illness she keeps in check with a low dose of Zyprexa. If you were to ask Scott, she would say she is a healthy person overall. So she was shocked when the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) published a study two years ago called Morbidity and Mortality in People with Serious Mental Illness. The report analyzed data from 16 states and found that, on average, people with severe mental illness die 25 years earlier than the general population. "Hearing that made me so sad," says Scott.

Who? President-elect Obama? Come on!

This is all over the web so you've probably seen it, but...

MIAMI (AP) - A Florida congresswoman was so determined not to be "punked" that she hung up on the president-elect.

The Miami Herald reports that Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (ih-lay-AH'-nah rahs LAY'-tih-nehn) got a call yesterday from a man sounding remarkably like Barack Obama. He wanted to congratulate her on her re-election, and say he was looking forward to working with her.

But Ros-Lehtinen suspected it was a radio station prank. She says she told the caller he sounded better than the guy on Saturday Night Live, but she wasn't going to be "punked." When Obama's chief of staff called, she hung up on him, too.

It took a call from a fellow congressman to convince Ros-Lehtinen the Obama call was legit.

She says Obama laughed about it all, and didn't blame her for being skeptical.

If Obama called me I'd think it was a radio station prank, too. ;->

I bought a pencil sharpener today. I was getting so tired of using a knife, and busting the damned lead over and over again, sometimes going through 2/3 of a pencil in one sharpening session, and throwing the worthless stub into the weeds with a curse. I'm not too swift with a knife.
Brand new, Made in China, and it's pink with a kitty face on the front of it. The plainer looking ones were $1.75 more, and this thing already cost me 2 hours' wages, so I thought to hell with the "conservative" look. "Give me the cheap one."
It has this spring loaded thingie that you pull out, and it clamps the pencil. Then, as you crank, the springs contract, and pull the pencil in as it sharpens. You don't have to push the pencil in. Though actually, it seems a bit harder than pushing the pencil in, instead of easier.
My brand new pencil sharpener even came with an owner's manual, printed in reasonably understandable Chinglish.
I've never had a brand new pencil sharpener in my entire life. Just the old ones from the 1940's or '50's that we picked up at rummage sales for 50 cents, or whatever. And I had to figure out how to use those by myself. The owner's manuals had been long lost.
I feel so tickled!

Light Show

I don't know if anything will ever top the keyboard juggler, but this is pretty cool. I almost wish I wouldn't have given up acid...

Does God Run Homeland Security?

Atheist Group Sues Kentucky Over Law Saying Safety Cannot Be Achieved Without God

(AP) A group of atheists filed a lawsuit Tuesday seeking to remove part of a state anti-terrorism law that requires Kentucky's Office of Homeland Security to acknowledge it can't keep the state safe without God's help.

Gargle with Razorblades, you Pencil Necked Geek!

Wally George, host of 'Hot Seat', was the TV talking-head precursor to Morton Downey Jr., Jerry Springer, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Keith Olbermann, and Stephen Colbert.

Wally's set was decorated with portraits of Nixon and John Wayne. His audience was a booing, chanting, peroxide-blonde mob, who literally waved bibles and little American flags.

Wally's interview style consisted of grade school insults and feigned disgust. His guest-list was a parade of attention-seeking punk rockers, drug-culture freaks, strippers, and neo-nazis.

And in this cooooorner...

'El Duce' was the singer for The Mentors-- flabby shirtless metalheads in executioner masks who sang about getting the clap from saggy, drugged-out truckstop hookers. The Mentors rose to national fame during Tipper Gore's PMRC witchhunt against free speech in pop music, when their childish lyrics were read before Congress, gems such as "Come on smell my anal vapor!/ use your face for toilet paper!"

Wally vs. Duce was a perfect match. Wally's interview style was that of a pro-wrestling interviewer; and El Duce was glad to play the heel. Wally 'unmasked' Duce; and the interview ended with Duce being 'escorted' off-stage by erstatz California Highway Patrolmen. (Another Wally George interview ended in a pie fight. In later years, he was a rollerderby commentator.)

Much like the movie "Idiocracy", Wally's show was an over-the-top parody of America's public carnival. Like the movie "Network", the worst aspects of Wally's schtick became the all-too-serious blueprint for Fox News. Likewise, The Mentors' goofy antics were denounced as "the worst of the worst" in Congressional testimony. IF ONLY!

IF ONLY The Mentors and Wally George were As Bad As It Gets!

Watch the low-budget youtube clip above, and see how those stunts are NOW big budget mainstream corporate media control methods. Fear! Spectacle! Boogeymen! Sex! Bile!

Chambliss won

My immediate reaction:

The "60 Democrat super-majority" was always a bullshit invention of the media, so it makes no difference, there. With 25 "blue dogs", Liebermann, and some Republicans (Snowe, for example) willing to cross party lines at times, the belief that *all* Democrats would ever vote in lockstep on every single issue is so absurd as to make one's hair stand on end when people (who we're supposed to believe are intelligent) say it out loud.

Saxby Chambliss is one of the foulest pieces of shit in the Senate, and the fact that the people of Georgia would re-elect him says plenty about them. (Don't get me started on Oklahoma, Utah, or Idaho.)

Chablis Chambliss, BTW, could be headed for an ethics investigation, which would make him a "typical republican".

Derrrrr...

It's official: Recession since Dec. '07
The National Bureau of Economic Research declares what most Americans already knew: the downturn has been going on for some time.

(The Bushtards wouldn't admit it, though.)

Venus, Jupiter will 'shine' tonight

Look to the southwest after sunset on Dec. 1 for a close conjunction between three bright solar system objects: the moon, Venus and Jupiter. If you have binoculars, you might even be able to fit all three of them in the field of view.
