'This Was an Assault on the Law Itself'

If Obama Doesn't Prosecute Bush's Torture Team, We'll Pay a Big Price Down the Road

"How did it come about that American military personnel stripped detainees naked, put them in stress positions, used dogs to scare them, put leashes around their necks to humiliate them, hooded them, deprived them of sleep and blasted music at them? Were these actions the result of 'a few bad apples' acting on their own? It would be a lot easier to accept if it were. But that's not the case."

-- Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, June 17, 2008

Bush mass for shut ins for 11-30-08

Bush mass for shut ins is on the air!

LIVE FROM THE ST GEORGE THE BLESSED CATHERDRAL IN CRAWFORD TEXAS ITS BUSH MASS FOR SHUT INS!

Good morning Bush worshippers, those who are ill and those who it's just best not to mix with society. May Lord God Bush bless you all for coming. For it is he who brought us life and everything else. He is a thousand points of light! He makes the sun rise in the morning, puts the frost on our flakes and puts the fruit on the trees. All praise the glory of Lord God Bush. Today we celebrate happy talk.

HAPPY TALK CELEBRATION

Happy talk is a good holy thing republicans doto divert attention away from how bad things really are. If someone states things as they are if they are bad, they must be accused of hating America.

SING PRAISE TO LORD GOD BUSH

Tiptoe through the window
By the window, that is where I'll be
Come tiptoe through the tulips with me

Oh, tiptoe from the garden
By the garden of the willow tree
And tiptoe through the tulips with me

Knee deep in flowers we'll stray
We'll keep the showers away
And if I kiss you in the garden, in the moonlight
Will you pardon me?
And tiptoe through the tulips with me

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CHENEY

And George the Blessed looked down upon the people and spoke `The economy has just turned the corner. Unemployment is at its lowest ever. There is no inflation. Mission accomplished. Bin Laden is surrounded. Those who question this hate America.`

What is it that the Profit Cheney is trying to teach us? It is that we all must say positive things about Lord God Bush or we hate America. This is the word of George.

Bush mass is over

Your attendance has been recorded and will be sent to the proper authorities. Go in arrogance, may the Lord God George W Bush be with you. Now the Bushmas carolers will sing a holiday carol for you.

MERRY BUSHMAS, GO SHOPPING

Here comes Santa Cheney!
Here comes Santa Cheney!
Right down Santa Cheney Lane!
Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer
are pulling on the reins.
Bells are ringing, children singing;
All is merry and bright.
Hang your stockings and say your prayers,
'Cause Santa Cheney comes tonight.

Here comes Santa Cheney!
Here comes Santa Cheney!
Right down Santa Cheney Lane!
He's taking toys from the girls and boys
while calling them rude names.
Hear those sleigh bells jingle jangle,
What a beautiful sight.
Jump in bed, cover up your head,
'Cause Santa Cheney comes tonight

Gas Station Guy: "It's all the fault of the unions!"

I have no idea how much it pays to stand behind a counter selling gas, cigarettes, "stimulants", lottery tickets, and junk food. I'm guessing "enough to get by", probably slightly less than that, but what do I know. Maybe he's the owner's brother? I will say that I need a place to buy gas, cigarettes, "stimulants", lottery tickets, and junk food at a reasonable price, so I'm glad that he does the job for whatever it pays him.

Obviously, standing behind the counter 8 hours a day, he talks to people, but let me set up the situation a little bit more.

G 20 Peru meeting financial coverup/bailout continues

There was a photoop showing Bush shaking hands in a poncho with the Asian leaders and then some twaddle about free markets and no tariffs and continuation of all those great policies that led directly into this mess.

The big one being the Ponzi scheme of unregulated
"new financial instruments" which were bad loans wrapped deceptively into CDO/CDS and sold off to European and Asian banks and other investors that helped bring this crisis to the enormity it is now.

They trusted the American banking system. They didn't realize how big thieves Bush, Gramm and other republicans of the modern parasitic/vampire era are. They allowed every scammer domestic and foreign a free hand and protection. For a price.

Notice there was nothing said by Bush that these scams his administration blessed are to be rectified or the buyers are to be compensated in any way?

That would imply the banks did something wrong or restitution is due.

His team, as is his cronies, are in denial mode all the way.

Cheney Kills US Soldiers

Go ahead. Search through this story. I can wait, but I'll save you some time. You won't find "Halliburton" in it, anywhere. I know. I looked.

KBR (Kellogg, Brown, and Root) was a Halliburton subsidiary until April of 2007.

The Pentagon findings on Houston, Texas-based KBR stem from the widely publicized death of Sgt. Ryan Maseth, a highly decorated 24-year-old Green Beret from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Maseth was electrocuted while taking a shower at his base in Baghdad.

snip

Pentagon officials now say at least 18 troops have been electrocuted since 2003 -- many due to faulty wiring and improper grounding.

Cheney's war profiteering didn't just kill troops on the battlefield.

You won't hear a peep about this from the rabid right wingers who still insist that the war in Iraq was justified. Rush Lumpy-ass is still too busy trying to blame Obama for Bush's 8 years of failure. (And don't even get me started on that idiot Brent Bozell.)

It's not possible to be too ruthless against the RW until they're extinct. Buncha scummy fucking murderers is what they are.

These Bones These Bones These Dry Bones

The US pays thousands of dollars for each set of verifiable remains of MIA's, and besides that, the survey teams are paid excellent wages -- like 10-12 times the wages of a school-teacher, for example.
If a villager stumbles on a crash-site, he starts dreaming about getting all of those thousands for himself, but of course he isn't going get all of them.
He has to first go through the village chief, then up the ladder, dropping a few thousand at each step up -- and he'll still end up at the fvcking bottom of the ladder, with not nearly as much as he dreamed of getting.
I've been approached more than twice already, with whispered stories of US bones somewhere, and that some villager wants to split the thousands with only one person, namely me.
They want me to go to the US Embassy and report directly to King George W, and fvck the ladder.
Sheeeit! Too much monkey business, for me to get involved in. I figure it's just bait to entice me out to some village and buy everybody beer for 3-4 days, and I ain't as stupid as I look, eh?

GM's Strategy- "Let's Build More Shitty Cars"

After years of hesitation, US carmaker General Motors (GM) has signed a deal to invest in the Russian auto industry.

GM will enter into a joint venture with AvtoVAZ, Russia's biggest carmaker and the manufacturer of the Lada, with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD).

The EBRD and GM will invest $240m (£170m) in equity and loans in the project, which will be managed jointly by GM and AvtoVAZ.

The deal should safeguard production of the Lada, a car whose shaky reputation has all but eliminated its export market since the collapse of communism.

The export market for AvtoVAZ and its rivals has collapsed since the fall of communism.

And although almost all Russians drive locally made cars, they only do so because trade barriers make them far cheaper than imported brands.

GM has produced lousy cars for years and has gotten their asses handed to them because American buyers are fed up with paying for major repairs on these lemons. So they've found a niche in the market where Russians are virtually forced to buy these shitty cars because of a virtually closed market.

These bastards shouldn't be getting a dime of taxpayer dollars to continue their moronic marketing agenda.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. These guys all claim to be Republican, "hands off my business", rock ribbed, free market place guys but they're all socialists when it comes to their bottom line.

These US automakers need a good pimpslapping.

CIA 2001 Missionary Plane Shootdown

By Joby Warrick
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, November 21, 2008; A08

An internal CIA probe has concluded that agency officials deliberately misled Congress, the White House and federal prosecutors about key details of the 2001 downing of an airplane carrying U.S. missionaries in Peru, according to a senior lawmaker who called yesterday for a new criminal inquiry into the case.

The agency's inspector general said CIA officers repeatedly ignored rules of engagement in a joint U.S.-Peruvian campaign to halt airborne drug smugglers, resulting in the downing of at least 10 other aircraft without proper warnings. Afterward, CIA managers concealed the problems from lawmakers and the Justice Department, the agency watchdog said.

Even the White House was kept in the dark, as agency officials and lawyers withheld key details while cautioning their staff to avoid putting anything in writing that might be used later in a criminal or civil case, the inspector general said

UnregulatedFreeMarketTrickleDown Success Story

Somali pirates transform villages into boomtowns, pumping money into homes, businesses

MOHAMED OLAD HASSAN and ELIZABETH KENNEDY
AP News

Nov 19, 2008 15:03 EST

Somalia's increasingly brazen pirates are building sprawling stone houses, cruising in luxury cars, marrying beautiful women — even hiring caterers to prepare Western-style food for their hostages.

And in an impoverished country where every public institution has crumbled, they have become heroes in the steamy coastal dens they operate from because they are the only real business in town.

"The pirates depend on us, and we benefit from them," said Sahra Sheik Dahir, a shop owner in Haradhere, the nearest village to where a hijacked Saudi Arabian supertanker carrying $100 million in crude was anchored Wednesday.

These boomtowns are all the more shocking in light of Somalia's violence and poverty: Radical Islamists control most of the country's south, meting out lashings and stonings for accused criminals. There has been no effective central government in nearly 20 years, plunging this arid African country into chaos.

Life expectancy is just 46 years; a quarter of children die before they reach 5.

But in northern coastal towns like Haradhere, Eyl and Bossaso, the pirate economy is thriving thanks to the money pouring in from pirate ransoms that have reached $30 million this year alone.

"There are more shops and business is booming because of the piracy," said Sugule Dahir, who runs a clothing shop in Eyl. "Internet cafes and telephone shops have opened, and people are just happier than before."

Bush Still Trying to Destroy Economy

...maybe letting the auto companies die is the right decision, even though an auto industry collapse would be a huge blow to an already slumping economy. But it’s a decision that should be taken carefully, with full consideration of the costs and benefits — not a decision taken by default, because of a political standoff between Democrats who want Mr. Paulson to use some of that $700 billion and a lame-duck administration that’s trying to force Congress to divert funds from a fuel-efficiency program instead.

U.S. power, influence will decline in future

Story Highlights

# Report says China will have growing impact, second largest economy by 2025
# There will be an unprecedented global transfer of power because of oil, report says
# Indonesia, Iran, Turkey, will likely see power, desire for natural resources increase
# "Unprecedented" growth means demand for basic resources will outweigh supply

How many of us have been saying that "investment in alternative energy" is "in the interest of our national security" for years, now?

OK, where's the freaking government?

The free market is all but gone, we all realize that now. So, where the freak is the government hiding amongst all this market mayhem?

Dubya, uh....do something, anything. Give us a reassuring nod at least that there will be a bread line for the non short sellers of this meltdown...i.e. all of us, save and except a few Uber_neo_billionaires that now control all the wealth in the US.

And Mr. Shorty Billions, what are you going to do now that no one is left standing? GM, F, C, and all the other letters are mere shells of corporations compared to just a few short weeks ago. Can we at least have jobs cleaning your Hampton's digs?

People are moving beyond the capitulative stage, and even beyond the shocked stage....now we are getting pi$$ed. Deeply pi$$ed. Bailouts to scoundrels and good companies left to rot away. Unregulated hedge funds short selling at market close day after day and taking America down with them. Unfuggin believable. Will there be social disorder, riots, looting....if this goes on much longer I wouldn't bet against it.

Just thought I'd get a little off my chest....

Advice for Obama

My home-boy Gene Lyons posts a bang-up column on Obama.

One of the Republican right’s most successful inventions has been liberal media bias. Even as the “mainstream” press has trended rightward, the liberal-bias trope has had two big advantages in keeping the party faithful, well, faithful. First, it allowed devotees to reject any and all information at odds with GOP dogma. Second, it preserved the sense of victimization essential to the right-wing world view. In reality, the Washington political media have been functionally pro-Republican for years. The so-called Gang of 500 long ago abandoned journalistic ethics for those of the entertainment industry. They’re celebrities, and as such would-be insiders and front-runners. Liberal media ? During the Clinton administration, this cohort flogged the make-believe Whitewater scandal for years. They went hysterical over Bill Clinton’s sexual sins and sustained false derogatory stories about Al Gore during the 2000 election (invented the Internet, “Love Story,” etc. ). After that, the nation’s premier newspapers, specifically The New York Times and The Washington Post, got suckered into running single-source, frontpage propaganda about Saddam Hussein’s nonexistent weapons of mass destruction. The embedded mainstream media treated the subsequent invasion of Iraq as the world’s biggest Boy Scout jamboree until chaos in Baghdad became impossible to ignore.

"Evil" vs "Unrepentant Evil"

Last minute actions by an outgoing President are nothing new. Clinton banned building roads in forests and the incoming Bush administration began working to overturn it almost as soon as they were in office. (Of course the first thing on their list was covering up the crimes of the father and Reagan with an executive order sealing their records. Let's hope that one can and will be undone, quickly.)

The Clinton pardon of Mark Rich will likely be matched by the Bush pardon of Scooter Libby and anyone else potentially vulnerable for the treasonous outing of a CIA NOC. (Said outting being vigorously defended by the rabid supporters of the.worst.President.ever).

Does Anyone Still Believe...

...that Reaganomics, aka "trickle down", aka "voodoo economics", aka "enrich the wealthy and we'll all be better off", aka "piss on you economics" works?

WASHINGTON - A government report says construction of new homes plunged 4.5 percent last month to the lowest level on government records, as U.S. builders slashed production while Wall Street nose-dived.

The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that construction of new homes and apartments dropped more than expected to an annual rate of 791,000 units from an upwardly revised September rate of 828,000 units. Previously, the slowest pace had been in January 1991, when the country was in recession and going through a similar housing correction. The government’s records date back to 1959.

Not to put too fine a point on it, 1991 was towards the end of Reagan's second term.

Convicted Felon Narrowly Loses Election

Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, convicted last month on federal ethics charges, lost his bid for a seventh term as final ballots were counted on Tuesday, giving Democrats at least 58 seats in the Senate for the first years of the Obama administration.

Apparently, ethics don't matter to GOP supporters.

This also closes a door for Moosalini to "bust through" by appointing herself to the Senate.

Has there been too much bipartisanship?

Or too little?

It's always hard to add anything to Greenwald.

Where is the evidence of the supposed partisan wrangling that we hear so much about? Just examine the question dispassionately. Look at every major Bush initiative, every controversial signature Bush policy over the last eight years, and one finds virtually nothing but massive bipartisan support for them -- the Patriot Act (original enactment and its renewal); the invasion of Afghanistan; the attack on, and ongoing occupation of, Iraq; the Military Commissions Act (authorizing enhanced interrogation techniques, abolishing habeas corpus, and immunizing war criminals); expansions of warrantless eavesdropping and telecom immunity; declaring part of Iran's government to be "terrorists"; our one-sided policy toward Israel; the $700 billion bailout; The No Child Left Behind Act, "bankruptcy reform," and on and on.

Most of those were all enacted with virtually unanimous GOP support and substantial, sometimes overwhelming, Democratic support: the very definition of "bipartisanship." That's just a fact.

The Whackos Didn't Go Away

They just lost this time.

The Religious Right And Election 2008: Down But Not Out

After eight years of unprecedented access to the White House and (until 2006) in the halls of Congress, Religious Right organizations are about to lose a lot of clout with much of official Washington and could see their influence at the national level diminished.

But it’s unlikely any of these organizations will close down. Rather, they will organize to defeat individual-freedom initiatives put forward by President Barack Obama, and they will place more emphasis on state and local governments as a way to press their agenda forward.

On Living in a Police State

I'm pleased to see that there are people besides Lloyd who see that we're living in a police state. We'll have to see how long such awareness goes, given the seemingly overwhelming problems Bush is leaving us.

License to Steal

Long before "9-11 changed everything," and George Bush declared war on the Bill of Rights, everything had already been changed and the Constitution already a victim. An ancient practice once used to enrich Kings and Warlords was sadly resurrected in the United States: Asset Forfeiture, a government issued license to steal, backed up by a crew armed to the teeth, and divisions of consiglieres and judges all in on the take that would make any old style Mafia Capo look like an amateur.

What’s Good for G.M. Is Good for the Army

Wes Clark pens an op-ed in the NYTimes concerning the need to keep GM, Ford, and Chrysler alive due to national security concerns.

By WESLEY K. CLARK
Published: November 16, 2008
Little Rock, Ark.

AMERICA’S automobile industry is in desperate trouble. Financial instability, the credit squeeze and closed capital markets are hurting domestic automakers, while decades of competition from foreign producers have eroded market share and consumer loyalty. Some economists question the wisdom of Washington’s intervening to help the Big Three, arguing that the automakers should pay the price for their own mistakes or that the market will correct itself. But we must act: aiding the American automobile industry is not only an economic imperative, but also a national security imperative.

Bailouts are good when requested by holy republicans for the banking industry. We need those people to lend money which they arent still after recieving the bailout money. Bailouts are bad when they are for auto manufacturing because then it would help evil union workers.

Six ways the GOP can recover...

...and start ruining the world again:

Politico is asking their panel of pundits this question: "What's the most important first step Republicans should take on the road to recovery?" Not surprisingly, the responses break down into two camps. Left-leaning respondents basically say "become less douchebaggy," while right-leaning ones say, in effect, "become more douchebaggy."

Domestic Conditions vol. 3

Dad made it thru surgery fine & no further sign of cancer. But a few days later they set a 10cc drip of anasthetic to 100cc and he had a rough overdose. A night of convulsions and difficult breathing, while his body processed the drugs. Now they want to move him 80+ miles to a VA 'recovery facility'-- stupid bureaucracy. But it looks like he'll be ok.

Landlord offered me $40,000 to move out, yesterday. I walked-out, holding out for more. Otherwise it's gonna be nobody-wins lawyer-wars.

Apparently, I'm laid off? After 3 weeks of 11 hour days & a single day off-- work has evaporated. No more offered until Christmas week. And only an 8 day commitment, then. I guess I'll apply for unemployment, but I wonder if they'll fire me entirely, for doing so.

The student dentist FINALLY finished my root canal & installed a post. But he hasn't done the crown yet.

I'm browing used RVs on craigslist. Dreaming of a landlord-free future.

I stopped in at the bar, for the first time in quite a while. Had a nice talk with Jo Boobs. Her School of Burlesque is cranking out so many new superstars, it's killing me...

Lyin' Limbaugh(TM)

Not that you didn't already know that the vulgar pigboy is a shameless liar, but in case you run into some hapless dupe who buys the garbage he's peddling...

In a time when the nation calls out for cool leadership and rational discussion, Limbaugh stirs the caldron, a tendency he proved in a particularly grotesque way last week when he accused Obama's party of plotting a government takeover of 401(k) retirement plans.

"They're going to take your 401(k), put it in the Social Security trust fund, whatever the hell that is," Limbaugh woofed. "Trust fund, my rear end."

A slight problem with Limbaugh's report: Obama and the Democrats have proposed no such thing.

The proposal, in fact, emanated from a single economist, one of many experts testifying to a congressional committee.

The president-elect has thus far shown as much interest in taking over your 401(k) as he has in moving the capital to Nairobi. (If you look hard, you might find that one somewhere out there in the blogosphere, too.)

To broadcast such a report -- so drained of context as to constitute a lie -- would be a shameless act at any time. But Limbaugh needlessly stirred the fears of the millions he holds in his thrall -- making the 401(k) thievery sound like nearly a done deal. Shameless.

There is a coherent way to argue against investigations and prosecutions of actions by Bush officials: one could argue that they weren't illegal. Obviously, if one believes that, then that is conclusive on the question.

How to Lose an Election

The Desperate Right's Five Biggest Flops of the 2008 Election

Yeah , what HE said.

The Rude one lays the wingnut blubberfest out to perfection , and the line "The spike in gun sales by those fearing that Obama will personally take away their assault weapons is like watching mad mongoloids rush for the last cup of pudding at the group home." , is an instant classic.

What pissed off many, many Democrats for the two presidential elections before this one wasn't just that we lost. It's also that the wins could easily be viewed in a range from "illegitimate" (definitely in 2000, possibly in 2004) to "really, really suspicious" (definitely in 2000 and 2004). So when we got our lawsuit on and were pretty goddamned angry, it wasn't just sour grapes. It's that we thought we had won.

Conservatives can't claim that in any rational way this time. 2008 wasn't an electoral or popular vote squeaker. John McCain just fucking lost and Barack Obama won. While some conservatives have been downright gracious and others have respected the win while promising hearty opposition, there's also been a vomiting to the fore of the nutbags who think the apocalypse is nigh in the Reign of Obama.

Here's some advice to conservatives seeking to define who they are in an America that said, "Suck on this" to them and voted for the Democrat: Stop being such fucking jerks about shit. Sure, sure, this advice comes from someone who believes that conservative ideology needs to be burned to the ground and the ashes made into an artificial ass that he can then fuck into dust that he can then take a post-orgasm piss on, but, you know, otherwise it comes from the heart.

There's gotta be a lot of people on the right who are just embarrassed by the stupid shit that anti-Obama-ites have been doing and saying. The spike in gun sales by those fearing that Obama will personally take away their assault weapons is like watching mad mongoloids rush for the last cup of pudding at the group home. Proving once again nothing says "I'm an easily manipulated pussy" like buying more and bigger guns, the whole surge in purchases is being fanned by people with, let's say, a vested interest in making sure the nutbags plunk down their diminishing savings on that new Glock: the firearms industry and the NRA (motto: "Scaring you stupid fucks into giving us more and more money for at least 30 years").

As our moment of national euphoria becomes codified into national memory-- into History-- I see distortion.

It seems the Official Version is going to be
that Americans chose Obama as an alternative to
MLK-era racism and Lincoln-era slavery.

I don't think so. I think Obama was chosen as an alternative to more recent wrongs, perpetrated by BUSH.

To say that Obama's win is -mostly- about the 1860's and 1960's-- is to say that his job is mostly done, just by being elected. Not so! Obama's mandate is to repair the present day damage STILL being done by Bush.

I Am Not Making This Up

From Time Magazine's "Blog of the Year" founder John Assrocket comes this bit of wisdom:

Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed. If Obama doesn't raise his standards, he will exceed Bush's total before he is inaugurated.

I don't know whether to laugh or just settle for being hysterically happy that people like this, who aren't even dipping their big toe in reality any more, aren't in power any more.

Bush Spy Revelations Anticipated When Obama Is Sworn In

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.

Or What Goes Around Comes Around...

From Wired.com: By Ryan Singel

When Barack Obama takes the oath of office on January 20, Americans won't just get a new president; they might finally learn the full extent of George W. Bush's warrantless domestic wiretapping.

Since the New York Times first revealed in 2005 that the NSA was eavesdropping on citizen's overseas phone calls and e-mails, few additional details about the massive "Terrorist Surveillance Program" have emerged. That's because the Bush Administration has stonewalled, misled and denied documents to Congress, and subpoenaed the phone records of the investigative reporters.

Now privacy advocates are hopeful that a President Obama will be more forthcoming with information. But for the quickest and most honest account of Bush's illegal policies, they say don't look to the incoming president. Watch instead for the hidden army of would-be whistle-blowers who've been waiting for Inauguration Day to open the spigot on the truth.

GOP leader: Rebuild party based on 'sanctity of marriage'

By: David Edwards and Andrew McLemore

The Republican brand is still alive and well, Rep. Mike Pence said on Fox News Sunday.

When asked by Chris Wallace what "conservative solutions" the GOP would bring to their current minority-party status, Pence said social issues like "the sanctity of marriage" will remain the backbone of the Republican platform.

"You build those conservative solutions, Chris, on the same time-honored principles of limited government, a belief in free markets, in the sanctity of life, the sanctity of marriage," Pence said.

Empathy

(Just in case anyone forgot that "elections have consequences" or that "the Supreme Court matters".)

via digby

Steve Benen at the Washington Weekly keeps a careful eye on Federalist Society extremists and he noted today that Jon Kyl, the Senate minority whip under Mitch McConnell, is already ignoring President-elect Obama's plea for going beyond narrow partisanship to solve the country's problems together. Kyl, one of the most mean-spirited ideological and vicious gut fighters in Congress, is already threatening to obstruct Obama's campaign promise to move the Supreme Court back towards the political mainstream and away from the far right extremism Kyl and the Federalist Society revel in. Hissing menacingly about a filibuster, Kyl promised to derail Supreme Court nominees like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, David Souter and Stephen Breyer and derided Obama's judicial philosophy:

"He believes in justices that have empathy," said Kyl, speaking at a Federalist Society meeting in Phoenix. The attorneys group promotes conservative legal principles.

Kyl said if Obama goes with empathetic judges who do not base their decisions on the rule of law and legal precedents but instead the factors in each case, he would try to block those picks via filibuster.

Think about that. The second highest ranking Republican in the Senate, just a few days after the election, is already talking about blocking Supreme Court nominations that haven't been named, in response to Supreme Court vacancies that don't exist.

I'd add, by the way, that Kyl was one of the conservative Republicans who, in 2005, supported the "nuclear option," which would have declared that filibustering a judicial nominee was against congressional rules. That, of course, was when Bush nominees were in jeopardy.

Ah. Take a big old whiff of that bipartisan spirit.

I'd add one more thing. When the GOP was threatening to nuke the Senate I was outspoken in daring them to do it, say "we'll retake the congress, some day".

BTW, I was also glad that they didn't.

Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself a merry little Bushmas now.

The Solution

I love the smell of desperation in the morning. Smells like...

...Newt Gingrich ? Holy shit , they have gone around the bend.
From everyone's favorite walking corpse:

Newt in 2012?
In serious conversations among Republicans since their election debacle Tuesday, what name is mentioned most often as the Moses, or Reagan, who could lead them out of the wilderness before 40 years?

To the consternation of many Republicans, it is none other than Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House.

Gingrich is far from a unanimous or even a consensus choice to run for president in 2012, but there is a strong feeling in Republican ranks that he is the only leader of their party who has shown the skill and energy to attempt a comeback quickly.

Even one of his strongest supporters for president in 2012 admits it is a "very risky choice." But Republicans are in a desperate mood after the fiasco of John McCain's seemingly safe candidacy.

Republicans seem chastened by the failure of seeking moderate, independent and even Democratic votes. They are ready to try going back to the "old-time religion."

One Republican critic of Gingrich concedes that he has an "unlimited" energy flow and a constant stream of ideas, an important commodity in a party that appears to have run short of ideas during the Bush years. But there is widespread concern about what is described in the party as deep "character flaws" of Gingrich's that would be difficult to overcome in a presidential campaign.

Nobody in Republican ranks, however, matches Gingrich's dynamism.

The consternation among Republicans is concentrated on McCain's failure to capitalize on Democratic flaws.

It would be a rocky road for Gingrich to the nomination, much less the presidency, but there are no other serious candidates inside the party at the moment.

The Conservative's Secret Meeting

I'm amazed. I flipped on CNN this morning and the first thing I saw was an interview of Tony Perkins (loser - FL) and Grover Norquist (never ran - 9th circle). They'd held a secret meeting "to decide the future of the Republican party" and were willing to talk about it.

Setting aside the "who died and made these guys the Republican party" part of it...

Their basic premise was "conservatives win" and therefore the party's problem was "too many moderates". "Look at what happened to the first Bush" is one quote that comes to mind.

I don't even know where to begin, and have no desire to help the GOP, anyway, but consider:

Gore got more votes than Bush. Bush won by 170,000 votes in OH in 2004. Clinton won by large margins and was at 70% popularity when he left office. Obama won by a landslide while Palin (the choice of the "social conservative", read "fundie nutbags") was a drag on the McCaim ticket. The Democrats have picked up seats in congress for the last two elections (but I must admit that future gains *will* be tough given the makeup of the states).

I'm not too concerned about the GOP kicking out all the moderates (they practically have, already, can you say "Chris Shays" and "Lincoln Chaffee"?) and going on to retake power.

But it's real obvious the "conservative" wing has already started kicking and screaming like children. It's going to be hard for the sane conservatives to retake control of the GOP.

And (this is important), Obama may as well forget about "bipartisanship" and just go ahead and steamroll these idiots.

Old times there are not forgotten

On May 22, 1856, Senator Preston Brooks beat Senator Charles Sumner with his Gutta-percha wood walking cane in the Senate chamber because of a speech Sumner had made three days earlier, criticizing President Franklin Pierce and Southerners who sympathized with pro-slavery violence in Kansas ("Bleeding Kansas").

In particular, Sumner had lambasted Brooks' kinsman, Senator Andrew Butler, who was not in attendance when the speech was read, describing slavery as a harlot, comparing Butler with Don Quixote for embracing it, and mocking Butler for a physical handicap. Senator Stephen Douglas of Illinois, who was also a subject of abuse during the speech, suggested to a colleague while Sumner was orating that "this damn fool [Sumner] is going to get himself shot by some other damn fool."

At first intending to challenge Sumner to a duel, Brooks consulted with fellow South Carolina Rep. Laurence M. Keitt on dueling etiquette. Keitt instructed him that dueling was for gentlemen of equal social standing, and suggested that Sumner occupied a lower social status comparable to a drunkard due to the supposedly coarse language he had used during his speech. Brooks thus decided to attack Sumner with a cane.

Operation Lemming

This is pretty funny. The wingers are all convincing each other to march off the cliff 4 abreast.

RedState is pleased to announce it is engaging in a special project: Operation Leper.

We're tracking down all the people from the McCain campaign now whispering smears against Governor Palin to Carl Cameron and others. Michelle Malkin has the details.

We intend to constantly remind the base about these people, monitor who they are working for, and, when 2012 rolls around, see which candidates hire them. Naturally then, you'll see us go to war against those candidates.

It is our expressed intention to make these few people political lepers.

They'll just have to be stuck at CBS with Katie's failed ratings.

2. Steve Schmidt
3. Mark McKinnon

Drudge

Here's the headline on the Drudge Report, right now:

STOCKS CONTINUE POST-ELECTION PLUNGE

See, everything was fine until two days ago. Now that Obama's President-elect (he doesn't even take office 'til the latter half of January) and the Democrats have a larger majority (that's not sworn in until January), everything that happened in the 8 years prior to the election has gone away. It never happened. It's all the Democrat's fault, now. "The Party of Responsibility" is blameless. The markets are crashing because the same people who voted TWO DAYS ago are now scared shitless of the government they chose.

(BTW, the story his headline links to doesn't even contain the *word* "election".)

Scientists Decode Set of Cancer Genes

This is cool.

For the first time, researchers have decoded all the genes of a person with cancer and found a set of mutations that may have caused the disease or aided its progression.

Using cells donated by a woman in her 50s who died of leukemia, the scientists sequenced all the DNA from her cancer cells and compared it to the DNA from her own normal, healthy skin cells. Then, they zeroed in on 10 mutations that occurred only in the cancer cells, apparently spurring abnormal growth, preventing the cells from suppressing that growth and enabling them to fight off chemotherapy.

I'm watching THE VIEW, and Joy Behar was talking about how last night McCain "finally came back to who he was." I.e., he's been kind of an ass for the past several months, and finally started to find his honor again. The token Republican countered with the following:

"I think it's hard because campaigns... really bring out the ugly in everyone on both sides. It's when you see them in their pure moments, Barack's speech last night, and John McCain's speech lsat night, that you see these moments of hope that they really have given us."

Newsweek has a new series convering the campaign.

This shit is great. A helluva lot more at the link.

NEWSWEEK has also learned that Palin's shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family—clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

Bush White House Under Siege

I saw film of some of this right before I went to bed, last night.

In a heavy drizzle shortly after midnight, several thousand people filled the barricaded segment of Pennsylvania Avenue between 15th and 17th streets in front of the White House dancing and chanting "O-ba-ma!" and "Whose house? Obama's house!" Some sang "America the Beautiful" and "Star Spangled Banner."

snip

The most remarkable scene unfolded after midnight in front of the White House. Under the watchful eye of the Secret Service and the Park Police, a predominantly young crowd waved huge American flags and sported signs that said "Yes we did!" Some climbed fences around the construction site where inaugural reviewing stands are going up.

A group of about a half-dozen Georgetown athletes said they jogged spontaneously from campus after hearing of Obama's victory. "This might be the best day of my life," said Danielle Bailey, 18, a freshman from Florida.

Kyle Poole, 48, a financier, said he brought a flag because he felt "honored and proud."

"I was once a Republican," he said. "Then George Bush came to the White House and now I'm thrilled to be here with the flag."

Question

I heard the strangest sound around midnight, last night. Did anyone else hear it?

It sounded like popcorn, or millions of bottles of champagne being opened at the same time.

Or heads exploding.

Does anyone know what it was?

Civil Rights

The saying is, "as California goes, so goes the nation."

It looks like California is on the verge of putting bigotry in their state constitution. This surprises me.

Florida and Arizona banned same-sex marriage and Arkansas passed a measure that would stop homosexuals from adopting children, but SD and CO defeated laws aimed at being test cases to overturn abortion rights.

So, gender and race seem to be fading as barriers to equality.

Choice of life partner? It's going to take a while.

Time and Circumstance

I just wanted to say that... I don't know what to say. I can't even find anything to cut-n-paste that even comes close to capturing what I want to say. Being the fatalist that I am, of course I am well aware of the obstacles that lie before us but as a proud black liberal I allow myself the indulgence of basking in the moment. This moment reflects favorably on us all...but I will stop now, for there is nothing that I can say that will do justice to this moment. Although, perforce, it is just a moment and the work continues apace...

Outside of Dr.King's "I Have a Dream" speech , Obama's acceptance speech was about one of the most inspiring things I've ever heard. All I can say is,
WOW.

Yes We Can Change the World...

It's kind of appropriate that Obama will celebrate tonight in Grant Park in Chicago , where it all went to hell for the Democrats in '68. I've always wondered what this country would look like today if Bobby Kennedy had lived to send Nixon to a life of selling used cars.

Final Zogby Poll Predicts Obama Win

EDIT: If Obama doesn't take Indiana (as the poll indicates he won't), I don't think the chances are very good that the Dems will acquire a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

I wouldn't rule it out completely, but I'd say odds were pretty strong against it.

I REALLY Like This

So, I stole it.

If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress. - Frederick Douglass

"Troubling" Video: Liberal elitists on the Upper West Side

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. soldiers have donated more presidential campaign money to Democrat Barack Obama than to Republican John McCain, a reversal of previous campaigns in which military donations tended to favor GOP White House hopefuls, a nonpartisan group reported Thursday.

Troops serving abroad have given nearly six times as much money to Obama's presidential campaign as they have to McCain's, the Center for Responsive Politics said.

Election Porn Part II

I can't bring myself to post about the latest polls. Superstition, I guess.

"I'm not depressed" is about as close to "optimism" as I want to get.

Nearly 30% of Americans think Bush did a great job. That's frightening.

Even if Obama wins in a landslide, these people will continue pulling us down. They'll be voting "for Sarah".

I may not be able to, but if I can get away from work I'm going to PA to help GOTV, tomorrow. However, IMO, the media narrative about PA is wrong. It's not a "must win" for Obama. It's a "can't win without it" for McSame.

We're on the verge of something extraordinary. The utter defeat of the extreme RW ideology that has ruled this country with an iron fist for decades.

But it hasn't happened, yet. It's not "in the bag".

Work to make it happen if you have the time.

Stay in line and vote, even if you don't have the time.

Don't ask for power. Take it.

Then, after the election, if we're fortunate enough to wrest power away from the forces of hatred, intolerance, eternal war, corruption, and irresponsible spending...

Don't forget to hold onto it.

Nothing's "over", tomorrow.

McSame's Problem Exposed

He's possessed. Or something.

Some People Call You Batshit Crazy. John McCain Calls You His Base

First off, we'd like to apologize for our earlier, constant, and may we say, in retrospect, tasteless, mockery of candidate McCain's consistenly vapid, disjointed ramblings (you will find a typical example here). There is of course a world of difference between an idiot and a man who is compelled by warlocks (or genies) to act like an idiot, and believe us, we would never knowingly make fun of the latter. As far as we're concerned, voodoo-induced inanity is a type of, well . . . disease, we guess, or handicap . . . you know, like being a cripple. Disability, that's the word! Call it what you will, but the victims of this Satanic scourge deserve our respect, our sympathy, and -- for having the remarkable courage to appear before large crowds of people in a state of utter, stupefied bewilderment -- our admiration.

And secondly, we don't know how much Gov. Sarah Palin paid this wanker to rebuke every form of witchcraft against her, but we surely do hope she had a money-back guarantee.

Bush mass for shut ins for 11-02-08

Today we celebrate John the Blesseds election.

JOHN THE BLESSEDS ELECTION CELEBRATION

John the Blessed was re-elected in a landslide. The evil democrats were vanquished and all is right in the land of the holy now. We should all pray to Lord God Bush to keep us safe from the evil wolves and boogeymen.

SING PRAISE TO LORD GOD BUSH

The time had come to elect a President
And all the famous candidates thought they were heaven-sent
They screamed and raved and pounded their hands above their
hearts
But soon the noble promises were hard to tell apart

Waiting at the pumpkin patch, a dog sincere and brave
And everybody hoped that soon the country he would save
The pumpkin said "The day has come for you to take a stand"
"For love has left the people across our native land"

Some wear the sign of the elephant
and some wear the sign of the mule
But we'll hold the sign of the beagle high
and love will shine right through

All the politicians, they swore he couldn't win
But Snoopy only shook his head and flashed his famous grin
He jumped into his faithful friend, the Sopwith Camel plane
And bounced around the countryside from Washington to Maine

Some wear the sign of the elephant
and some wear the sign of the mule
But we'll hold the sign of the beagle high
and love will shine right through

New York State was lookin' bad till Snoopy made a speech
Soon Illinois and Tennessee were both within his reach
He won the vote in Oregon but time was growin' thin
And back at the convention hall, the votes were pourin' in

Snoopy smiled his way into the hearts of everyone
But when the votes were counted up, they found he needed one
The winning vote for Snoopy came when a stranger raised his hand
Snoopy turned, the stranger spoke
"Mein friend, vee meet again!"

Some wear the sign of the elephant and some wear the sign of
the mule

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CHENEY

And John the Victorious looked down upon the people and spoke `I have now been elected. The liberals made us have this costly election. When you see these large budget deficits say to them that you were all for having the expensive election weren't you`.

What is it that the Profit Cheney is trying to teach us? That elections are costly and we would be better off not having them now. Then we can afford another tax cut for the rich. If the liberals complain about the deficit, blame them for wanting the election. This is the word of George.

Bush mass is over

Your attendance has been recorded and will be sent to the proper authorities. Go in arrogance, may the Lord God George W Bush be with you. Now for your listening enjoyment, we have the wonderful Bushmas Carolers here to sing you a Bushmas carol. Enjoy.

TIS THE SEASON

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
The NSA is coming to town

They're making a list,
And checking it twice;
Gonna determine Who's naughty and nice.
The NSA is coming to town

They see you when you're sleeping
They watch when you're awake
They make reports if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!

O! You better watch out!
You better not cry.
Better not pout, I'm telling you why.
The NSA is coming to town

Palin Pwnd

You're not going to believe this. Two Canuck assholes that call themselves The Masked Avengers called up Palin and pretended to be French president Sarkozy. This goes on for close to 6 minutes.

Excerpt:

"Sarkozy" asks Palin if Joe the Plumber is her husband and adds: "We have the equivalent of Joe the Plumber in France. It's called Marcel, the guy with bread under his armpit."

"Sarkozy" also tells Palin his wife is "so hot in bed" and then informs her that Bruni has written a song for her about Joe the Plumber entitled "Du rouge a levres sur une cochonne" _ which translates as "Lipstick on a Pig." heh.

Lots of ideas for the next one.

"This is Pooty-Poot. I can see your house from here!"

"Hi Sarah. Ahmadininutjob, here. Death to America! HAHAHAHAHA!"

"President Palin, SAC just picked up incoming missiles. We're going to lose NYC. You need to retaliate quickly!"

Big Art

Tonite was Kehinde Wiley's opening at the gallery. He's a black man who paints modern black men in ornate old-master style. The paintings are huge-- like 12 feet tall by 20 feet wide.

Some of the frames, alone, weigh around 800 lbs.

So it was like a barn raising, getting these things on the wall.

This is not the type of art where Joe the Asshxle says "my kid could do that".
Or, "Whut is it supposed to be?"

Many pedestrians stopped and gawked thru the big glass overhead door, as the show went up.
But black people in particular had their minds blown. I can't tell you how many times I heard them say they wanted to come back with their teenage sons.

Lots of sexy black folks at the opening. I wore an Obama t-shirt I bought on the street, with the caption "H.N.I.C". There was an awkward moment when the straightlaced, white gallery owner asked me what it meant. But a former Miss Jamaica intervened and said she loved it, so I was off the hook.

Next week the Keith Haring retrospective opens at another location. We're showing his "10 Commandments" series, and they dwarf even Kehinde's canvases. Haring's are 25 or 30 feet tall. Each day, an 18-wheeler delivers 2. That's all that fit in 53' trailer. Getting those on the wall is a 2 week process of pulleys & scaffolding & thick steel brakets.
The real show stopper there is the catalog. It's the size of 6 red bricks. It weighs a hernia. But inside is a reminder that, in the days before Macintosh computers; one guy with a magic marker could do so much.

The McCain Effect

Sunday, October 12

An Obama supporter was shopping with his infant son when an angry McCain-Palin supporter rammed his shopping cart. Luckily, the police were able to identify the man from video of his license plate, and he was charged with assault.

Wednesday, October 15

In Greensboro, North Carolina, a reporter Joe Killian was kicked to the ground at a Palin rally just for doing his job. He was interviewing Obama supporters who were protesting the Palin rally after a group of angry McCain-Palin supporters warned him that Palin was the story - not the protesters. One McCain-Palin supporter was so angry at Killian for interviewing the Obama supporters that he kicked him to the ground - from behind.

Friday, October 17

Even Barack Obama's home state is not immune.
